The cost of studying in the UK in 2026/27: tuition, living costs and the visa

The UK is the most requested destination among our students, and the first question every family asks is what a year will actually cost. These figures come from their official sources, with the date we checked them, so you can build a real budget rather than an estimate from an advert.

Tuition fees

Based on the published 2026/27 international fees at 16 of our partner universities in the UK:

  • Bachelor’s: GBP 17,000 to 33,000 a year.
  • Master’s: GBP 17,000 to 38,100. Most UK master’s courses last one year.

These ranges exclude medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, which cost far more.

Living costs

Living costs run from GBP 12,000 to 18,000 a year in most cities, and London adds roughly GBP 8,000 to 18,000 a year on top.

The difference between cities is sometimes bigger than the difference between universities, so a university with higher fees in a cheaper city can be the cheaper choice overall.

The visa and the health surcharge

  • Student visa fee from outside the UK: GBP 558.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP 776 for each year of the visa, paid in full with the application.

For example, a two-year visa means GBP 1,552 in health surcharge, paid once before you travel.

The money you must show for the visa

Alongside any tuition you still owe, you must show living money for up to 9 months:

  • London: GBP 1,529 a month, which is GBP 13,761.
  • Outside London: GBP 1,171 a month, which is GBP 10,539.

The money must stay in the account for at least 28 days in a row, and the last day of that period must fall within 31 days of the date you apply.

How much money do you need to show for a UK student visa?

A worked example: one year of a master’s

A master’s in Manchester with GBP 18,000 tuition, using the minimum living amount the visa requires:

ItemAmount
TuitionGBP 18,000
Living money for 9 months outside LondonGBP 10,539
Student visa feeGBP 558
TotalGBP 29,097

Then add the health surcharge for the length of the visa (GBP 776 per year, or GBP 388 for a part-year of 6 months or less), flights, the accommodation deposit and first-month costs. The visa figure is the minimum the government asks for, not what you will actually spend; the realistic living range above is higher.

Will a UK degree be equivalenced in Jordan?

Under the Ministry of Higher Education’s amended instructions of 2025, the minimum residence is 6 months (two semesters) for a master’s and 8 months for each year of a bachelor’s. The university must also be on the Ministry’s list of recognised universities.

For a bachelor’s, the secondary school average must meet the minimum for the field before you enrol: 60% for most subjects, 80% for engineering and pharmacy, and 90% for medicine and dentistry.

Are there scholarships?

Most UK universities offer discounts and merit awards to international students. They usually reduce tuition rather than cover it, and many are awarded as applications arrive, so applying early improves your chances.
