Scholarships and funding

OVERVIEW

What this covers

Most scholarship advice online is a list of awards you will never win. What matters is which ones you are actually eligible for, and whether the effort of applying is worth it for your profile.

The three kinds worth knowing about

University awards are the most winnable. Many institutions offer automatic reductions based on grades, and these need no separate application, only that your file arrives early enough to be considered.

Partner discounts are reductions available through agent agreements rather than advertised publicly. These are a real advantage of applying through an agency that holds direct agreements, and they are not on the university website.

Government and external scholarships are the most competitive and the most demanding, with deadlines often a year ahead of the intake. Worth applying for if your profile is strong, but never worth relying on.

A realistic expectation

Very few scholarships cover everything. Most reduce tuition by a proportion, and almost none cover living costs. Plan on the basis that funding improves affordability rather than creating it. If a degree only works with a full scholarship, we will tell you that before you apply rather than after.

Timing decides more than merit

Scholarship budgets are finite and awarded as applications arrive. A strong student applying in May often gets less than an average student who applied in November. Nine to twelve months before the intake is when this conversation should happen.

QUESTIONS

Common questions

Who is eligible for a scholarship?

It depends on the award. Some are academic, some are country-specific, and some are partner discounts available only through agents. We review your grades and financial position and tell you which are realistically worth applying for rather than listing everything that exists.

Do scholarships cover the whole cost?

Rarely. Most reduce tuition by a proportion rather than covering it entirely, and very few cover living costs. Plan on the basis that a scholarship improves affordability rather than creating it.
