Overview

Why students choose Germany

Germany's public universities charge little or no tuition even to international students, with costs concentrated in living expenses and a semester contribution. Engineering and applied sciences are the traditional strengths.

The practical hurdles are the blocked account required for the visa and the fact that many undergraduate programmes are taught in German. English-taught options are more common at master's level.

What it costs

A year in Germany, in real numbers

State universities charge no tuition for most Bachelor and Master programmes (Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students EUR 1,500 a semester); every student pays a semester contribution of about EUR 70–430.

Tuition ranges are the international fees published by our partner universities in Germany, per year. Some specialist programmes cost more.

  1. 1

    National student visa

Jordanians need a German national (D) visa for study. Start early, as the whole process can take several months.

  2. 2

    Apply on the portal

Register on the German Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de/visa), fill in the national visa form and upload your documents for the German Embassy in Amman to pre-check.

  3. 3

    Prepare key documents

You need your university admission, proof of funds of EUR 992 a month (usually a blocked account of EUR 11,904 for one year), and the documents on the embassy study checklist.

  4. 4

    Appointment at VFS Global

After the online pre-check you get an email to book an appointment at VFS Global in Amman, where you hand in documents, pay the fee and give fingerprints.

  5. 5

    Decision in about 3 weeks

The embassy says processing takes about three weeks after your appointment. You collect your passport from the GBS office in Barakah Mall.

  6. 6

    Register after arrival

After you arrive, register your address at the local registration office and book an appointment with the foreigners authority to get your residence permit.

Visa rules change. Always follow the official guidance for your application date; ask us to check your file before you submit. Also see make-it-in-germany.com. Checked November 2026.

Questions

What students ask us about Germany

Can't see yours? Ask a counsellor on WhatsApp - you get a person, not a bot.

Ask on WhatsApp
How early should I start my application?

Nine to twelve months before the intake if you want scholarship options and a realistic choice of universities. Three to four months is possible for some destinations but narrows what is available, and for anything requiring an entrance examination or a competitive visa appointment it is usually too late. Start by talking to us, not by choosing a university.

What documents do I need to get started?

For a first assessment we only need your academic transcripts and certificates, and your English test result if you have one. Passport, financial evidence and references come later, once we have agreed a shortlist. Do not send passports or bank statements through a website form.

Do I need an IELTS score before applying?

Not to begin. We can assess your profile and build a shortlist without it, and many universities will issue a conditional offer that you meet later. What the score needs to be depends on the university and the programme, and some institutions accept their own internal test or a pathway route instead.

Can I work while I am studying?

Most study destinations allow international students to work a limited number of hours during term, but the rules differ by country and are revised regularly. Ask us for the current position for your destination rather than relying on what a friend did two years ago.

How much money do I need to show for the visa?

Every destination sets its own financial requirement, and it usually covers first-year tuition plus a set living cost figure. The amount, how long it must have been in the account, and whose account it can be in all vary. We prepare this to your embassy's exact current requirements as part of the visa service.

What happens if my visa is refused?

We tell you the likely reason and whether an appeal or a fresh application is the better route. Most refusals we see come from financial evidence that was technically correct but presented the wrong way, which is preventable. Universities will often defer an offer to the next intake rather than withdraw it.

Are the programmes taught in English?

Many are, but not all, and it varies by faculty within the same university. Some institutions teach a degree in English at master's level and in the local language at undergraduate level. We confirm the language of instruction for the exact programme before you apply.
