Recognition is decided at home, not abroad
A university being accredited in its own country tells you almost nothing about whether your degree will be accepted when you return. Recognition is decided by the authority in the country where you intend to work — in Jordan, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and for clinical professions the relevant professional council.
Where this bites hardest
Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and engineering. These are the fields where a professional body decides whether you can register and practise, and where a degree that is perfectly legitimate abroad can leave you unable to work at home.
It comes up most often with medical degrees from Turkey, Georgia, Cyprus and parts of eastern Europe — all destinations where places are genuinely available to international students, and all destinations where the recognition answer varies by institution and sometimes by year.
What to check before you apply, not after
- Whether the specific institution appears on the recognised list for your home country — not the country in general, the named university.
- Whether the programme is on that list, since a university can be recognised for some degrees and not others.
- Whether there is an equivalency examination on return, and what its pass rate looks like.
- Whether the language of instruction affects recognition.
- Whether recognition has changed recently, because these lists are revised.
Why some agents avoid this conversation
Because the honest answer sometimes loses the sale. A student set on a medical degree abroad does not want to hear that the route they have chosen may not lead where they think. We would rather have that conversation before the tuition is paid than after graduation.
