Medicine is the specialisation where the gap between “I was accepted” and “I can practise at home” is widest, and where the deposits are largest. A family can spend six years and a great deal of money on a degree that Jordan will not equivalence, because of a condition that applied on the day the student enrolled.
Two separate authorities decide the outcome, and they ask different questions.
The 90% condition
For a foreign medical or dental degree to be equivalenced in Jordan, the Ministry of Higher Education requires that the student met the Jordanian admission minimum for that field before enrolling abroad. For medicine and dentistry that minimum is a secondary school average of 90%.
Read that again, because it is the single most expensive misunderstanding in this market: a foreign university accepting a student with 84% does not make the resulting degree equivalenceable in Jordan. The university’s admission decision and the Ministry’s equivalency decision are unrelated. Nobody at the university has any reason to warn you.
If the average is below 90%, the routes worth discussing are a different health specialisation with a lower threshold — nursing and the medical sciences sit at 70% — or improving the average before committing. Enrolling anyway is not a plan; it is a bet against a published rule.
The university has to be recognised on the day you enrol
The medical school must appear on the Ministry’s list of recognised universities at the time of enrolment, and if any part of the degree was taken elsewhere, that institution has to be recognised too. Check it yourself on the Ministry’s recognised universities list and keep a dated screenshot of what you saw.
Time on campus is counted
For students enrolled from 1 October 2023 onward, a bachelor’s-level programme requires at least eight months of regular in-person study per academic year. Periods can be split, but each stay must be at least two consecutive months or one full semester. Any medical programme that markets itself as partly remote, or that runs the pre-clinical years at a distance, needs to be measured against that rule in writing before you enrol.
The second gate: licensing
Equivalency establishes that your degree counts academically. It does not, by itself, let you treat patients. Licensing and postgraduate certification for doctors in Jordan run through the Jordan Medical Council, alongside registration with the Jordan Medical Association and the Ministry of Health.
Requirements for graduates of foreign medical schools — internship, examinations, and the order in which they are taken — are set by the Council and change from time to time. Confirm the current conditions with the Council directly at the point you are choosing a university, not in your final year. If you intend to practise in the Gulf rather than Jordan, check that country’s authority as well; recognition in Jordan does not travel automatically.
Before you pay a medical school deposit
- Confirm the student’s secondary average is at or above 90%.
- Find the medical school on the Ministry’s recognised list, with today’s date.
- Get the required months on campus per year, in writing, from the university.
- Read the Jordan Medical Council’s current conditions for foreign graduates.
- If the plan is to practise in the Gulf, check that country’s licensing authority too.
GESCO checks all five before recommending a medical placement, and we say so plainly when a school does not clear them, however much a student has set their heart on it. A refusal at this stage costs a conversation. A refusal six years later costs a career.
