A public research university whose roots run back to the Coventry School of Design in 1843. It became Lanchester Polytechnic in 1970, named after the engineer Frederick Lanchester, then Coventry Polytechnic in 1980 and a university in 1992. That engineering lineage still defines it, particularly in automotive and transport design.
